Rupar Mandalar Resort

Room Type: Deluxe, Family villa

Descripton: This delightful hotel is located in the business district away from the central but what a hidden gem! On arrival, we were greeted by the manager and staff. Check in was quick and we were welcomed with a cold towel and drink. After being given a personal tour of the hotel - the pool is fantastic, we were shown to our room.

We were here the third week of Sept, stayed for 3 nights and touring Myanmar with 3 friends. It’s still low season and the first night we arrived we were the only guests at the hotel (will be the closest I ever come to feeling like Hollywood movie stars who rent out entire hotel for their vacations). Each guest unit is its own suite with your own front porch. Staff was fantastic. The rooms are gorgeous. Beds were comfortable. Definitely a 5 stars resort experience.

Hotel restaurant was very good. The restaurant staff was so incredibly attentive that it felt like we had our own private butler throughout the meal like in Downton Abbey. Our wine and water classes always filled, used dishes immediately taken away, the whole works. There was a waiter who pretty much stands next to each table with guests and observe everything that is needed. Breakfast was served outside and was delightful. Great croissants and pastries, and they’ve got everything else for western style breakfast.

The grounds of the hotel are lovely and well groomed. Hotel has incredible ambience. The pool was stunning and great size. Our last day we didn’t sightsee and our flight was in the afternoon, so I went for a swim and I was the only one at the pool. The view was beautiful and the water was crisp and clean. As luck had it it was great sunny weather too so I loved it. Although one of my girlfriends went one day late afternoon and she said there were people who were not hotel guests using the pool (probably with hotel owner’s permission). They also have a nice gym with sauna. One of my other girlfriends used the gym and she said as soon as she got in, a staff person came in and stood there just to wait on her. It’s very colonial service that way here. You pretty much have your own valet while staying in this hotel.

The story we heard was that this hotel was originally built by the owner for his own entertainment for his friends. The government compelled him to turn it into a hotel for public use so he had no choice. The government is now requiring him to add 5 more rooms because to qualify as a hotel, the place must have 25 rooms, and right now it only has 20. Anyway, that’s the rumor. I have no way to substantiate it. In any event, I must say I’m glad it’s open to tourists like us.
